Northern Ashanti Mines Challenges Konongo Lease Termination in Court

Northern Ashanti Mines Company Limited (NAMCL) has gone to the High Court in Accra to challenge the termination of its mining lease at Konongo, after joint military and police personnel took control of the site on 22 October 2026, according to a report by GhanaWeb.

What is reported

  • NAMCL, a subsidiary of Nguvu Mining Limited, says its lease was terminated by a Minerals Commission letter dated 30 April 2026, which reportedly cited failure to remedy statutory and regulatory breaches.
  • The company has filed for judicial review and an interlocutory injunction against the Minerals Commission, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and the Attorney-General. It is seeking to stop further enforcement of the takeover and any transfer of the mineral rights while the case proceeds. The motion is listed for hearing on 29 October 2026.
  • The company says it has invested over US$110 million in exploration and redevelopment, including a processing plant reported to be more than half complete, and that about 422 workers and contractors are affected.
  • It argues that Act 703 required a period to remedy any deficiencies before cancellation, and says it had asked the authorities for help against illegal mining at the site.

What is not yet known

The government and Minerals Commission had not publicly responded to the company’s claims in the report, and the court has not ruled. TheGhanaGold will update this story as the case proceeds.

Why it matters to investors

The case highlights title risk: confirming not only that a lease exists, but that its holder is in good standing with the regulator. See our guide on evaluating a gold project.
